![]() ![]() I plan to keep the XP machine around until everything I need is transferred over. I have a lot of old applications on the XP machine that I will need to migrate as time permits. The objective is just to move files and folders, but it's a bit more than a one-time event. Am I correct that this is a one-time file transfer, or will you need continuous access to the XP machine? It looks like things are going to be tricky.įrom your initial description, it sounds like you were just trying to move files from the XP machine to the Surface. Again, support for accessing Windows XP file shares on Windows 10 was dropped in the newer builds, so things may be tricky. If the share does appear, then we need to take another look at the Windows 10 machine. If the drive C share doesn't appear, then something went wrong when the share was set up. This should bring up a list of shares which have been set up on the computer, including your drive C share. If you had to make any changes here, go to the Windows 10 machine and see if you can access anything. "File and Printer Sharing" is already checked. Then go to the Exceptions tab and put a check in Fire and Printer Sharing if it isn't there already. Once in Windows Firewall, make sure Don't Allow Exceptions is unchecked. Windows Firewall should be right there or in Network and Internet Connections. To check the firewall settings in Windows XP, go to Control Panel. ![]() Open a Windows Explorer window (not Internet Explorer) and type the computer's name after a couple backslashes in the address bar and hit Enter. If Windows 10 still isn't seeing anything, let's see if Windows XP can see its own shares. ![]() ![]() I collapsed everything but the Network folder and then expanded that one. I then went to the Win 10 machine (this one) and opened up a File Explorer window. The computer then put up a progress window that showed folders moving from left to right. I was asked if I really wanted to share the root folder and I clicked "Yes". I also left the "Allow network users to change my files option" unchecked. On the XP machine, I right-clicked on the C: drive, selected "Sharing and Security.", selected the Sharing tab, and checked the "Share this folder on the network" option. To facilitate copying files and folders, I tried to share the C-Drive on the XP machine with the new Win 10 machine over our LAN. I am in the process of migrating everything from an old XP machine to a shiny new Win 10 Surface Book Pro. ![]()
